Meet our Web Developer Tom – a self-proclaimed BBQ King, the next Monty Don, and most importantly a great addition to The Social Desk team!
Find out more about Tom and why he swapped dodgy truck stops to become a web developer!
What was your path into web development?
I’ve definitely not taken the traditional route into Web Development, however, I’m a strong believer in everything happens for a reason and wouldn’t change the journey it’s taken to get here.
I worked as a Marine Engineer for 12 years, installing evacuation systems on ships and ferries across Europe. After such a long time working away, I finally had enough and decided it was time for a career change.
Programming and building computers have always been a hobby of mine and after a chat with a good friend and some encouragement, I took a leap of faith and decided to turn my hobby into a profession.
Fast forward two years later and a lot of late nights studying, I landed a Developer role at Sykes Cottages in Chester. Being thrown in the deep-end was terrifying but I quickly got up to speed, learned the ropes, and gained some invaluable experience that I’ll take with me for the rest of my career.
How long have you worked with The Social Desk?
I started with The Social Desk at the beginning of June, so I’m only in my third week but the team here is absolutely great and I already feel like I am part of the gang!
We’re all ambitious people looking to grow personally and professionally so I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
What does your role at The Social Desk entail?
As a Web Developer, my main role will be designing and building new client websites, as well as maintaining our current client’s websites with content and security updates.
Another part of my role here will be networking and business development. I’m really looking forward to getting back out meeting people after a year of zoom calls and working from home!
Outside of work, what is your life like?
Like the rest of us, my social life recently has taken a bit of a hit. Over the past year, I have perfected my bbq’ing skills, built a vegetable patch, grown some carrots, and become the next Monty Don!
Pandemic aside, I enjoy meeting up with friends for a round of golf, getting on my bike, and even playing the odd game of rugby when my knees will allow it. I’ve become an Uncle, twice, over the past year which has given everyone in our family a huge boost and I can’t wait to start my Uncle babysitting duties!
What is your biggest fear?
Liverpool winning the league again!
Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us!
I actually hold a full Class 1 HGV license and drove a lorry around Europe for 3 years, staying in some very strange and dodgy truck stops!
