Founded on 18th September 2018, The Social Desk started as a one-man band, focusing specifically on social media marketing. Fast forward to 2021 and our services have now grown to all manners of digital marketing, including:

The company has gone from strength to strength and The Social Desk team now consists of digital marketing strategists, content marketers, web developers and more, all bringing a wealth of skillsets to the team.

Our valued clients bring with them varied and interesting projects, from a range of industry backgrounds including manufacturing, sports, and live events. Our clients range from sole traders to multi-national companies and no job is too big or too small for us!

Our Managing Director James looks back over the last three years and reflects on how far the company has come.


  • What was your motivation for starting the company?

My initial motivation for starting the company was to offer as much as I possibly could in terms of marketing to clients. Having seen everything going digital, I noticed a niche within the market, mainly people’s time being short, and myself having the skills and time to help others.

  • Who were your first clients?

Our first clients were small SME’s, sole traders, and friends and family with businesses, who were struggling with an expanding digital world, and needed to develop their online presence but had limited time and resources to do this. The main factor for these businesses in moving forward was trust; they needed to have faith that I understood their brand, company, and the professional edge they wanted in the new era of digital marketing.

  • How has The Social Desk grown over the past three years?

In all honesty, the things The Social Desk team has achieved in the last 3 years are beyond what I had dreamed of. I began the journey in the backroom of my house, and have been joined by team members along the way. Recently, the backroom has become too small and we have moved to our new offices in Liverpool. We have grown in terms of the diversity of what we are able to offer and achieve for our clients and our understanding of the different markets and the industries that require our help. I am proud that we are a team that never sits still, and have the drive and passion to be constantly learning new things. We are incredibly ambitious, always setting ourselves high standard goals to push and drive us forward.

  • What has been your biggest learning curve these past 3 years?

Starting out alone, in a fast-paced world of digital marketing, there is no downtime. I am constantly learning; the old adage “every day is a learning day” is certainly true for me. This year, however, has demanded more time for me to be reflective; to take time and invest in myself in new ways. I love my work and I am passionate about what I do; however, this year more than most, I have been learning new ways to switch off, to reflect, and consolidate. To learn that this doesn’t result in bad things happening but affords me the opportunity to come back with a fresh perspective, a new dynamic to working, and gives me more drive and passion to pass on to my customers.

  • What are the highs and lows of managing a digital marketing agency?

I love seeing the end product, knowing that The Social Desk team has developed and produced something of such high quality. I take pride in the high standard of work we produce and feel incredibly proud of the inspiring and dedicated team we have at The Social Desk.

There are no lows, only opportunities to make changes! It can be hard at times to manage others’ expectations within budget when client expectations don’t meet what is achievable. However at these times, we thrive on developing the best package we can for the client, we would never turn anyone away!

  • What has been your highlight of the past three years?

Networking! I have found a love for networking and I could do it all day every day! I thoroughly enjoy meeting and talking with new people, learning about varying business models, and hearing people talk with such passion and drive – I find it really inspirational!

I guess it has highlighted for me the importance of relationships within the business; whether in the wider world or closer to home in the office. Business thrives on relationships, it’s what helps them to grow and blossom and I hope that over the coming years, The Social Desk team will build upon the relationships we have made, whilst always remaining open and inviting to developing more.

  • What has been your highlight of this past year?

We have moved office! We have secured a new office based in The Cotton Exchange Building in Liverpool, and we are all super proud of our new space. Last year, the pandemic really hampered plans to move anywhere, after all, where would we go?! So this year, we have embraced all the lockdown easing and have a new office. In essence, whilst everyone else has been making plans to work at home, I have eagerly awaited my plans to move the office out of my home, to create space between work and home; and as I’ve watched these plans come to fruition, I know this is the best move for my mental and physical health – and its onwards and upwards from here.

  • What’s next for The Social Desk?

As I’ve said, we thrive on learning and developing and never want to stand still and our goals for the next year are based on this ethos. We set high expectations for ourselves, and our forecasting reflects this. The team wants to work towards being able to offer our clients a 360-degree package, to offer them as many marketing solutions as we can, a one-stop-shop if you will. We know this means pushing the boundaries of our company. It means generating more good relationships, generating higher level ROI to give clients positive feedback, and facing each problem with a passion and drive to find the solution. But we are excited to see what this year holds for us, and together I know we can achieve our goals!

We just need to remember to plan the celebrations for our 4th birthday, in style!
